A decorative brooch featuring a thistle and celtic knotwork. Perfect as a kilt pin, brooch, or pin for your costume or bag.

The thistle has been Scotland's national flower for over 500 years, featured on silver coins as far back as 1474. The origins of the thistle as the national flower are murky, with the best (and most fanciful) story being that of the Battle of Largs, in which invading Norse raiders sought to conquer Scotland by landing their longships in the dead of night to ambush the sleeping Scotsmen. In order to be as stealthy as possible, the Vikings removed their boots, but as they crept up the highlands they stepped on a thorny thistle. Their cries of pain alerted the slumbering clansmen, who promptly rose up and routed the invaders.

It's a fun story, whether or not it is entirely apocryphal is anyone's guess. However, anyone who's stepped on a thistle will know that the ensuing cries of pain will surely rouse even the deepest of sleepers.
