Description

Bronze strapend with openwork ornament of acanthus-derived tendrils. Broad tongue-shaped strapends with foliate decoration were introduced to England via Continental influence in the 10th century, eventually supplanting the native narrow animal-ornamented style. This is a late example - though stratigraphy does not allow dating closer than the 11th to mid-12th century, the plant stem ornament has closest parallels in southern English manuscripts of the second quarter of the 11th century. Suits this buckle.
