This belt buckle is based upon a unique historic design hailing from c.1450 Scandinavia. The buckle, square in shape, is inscribed with the phrase "help ghot un maria nu altit" meaning "God and Mary always be our help". The name of the buckle, King Erik, comes from the crown design that splits the word 'help' in two. This crown resembles the one on King Erik of Pomerania's (despite the name he was King of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway) coins minted during his reign, hence the association. This belt buckle unfortunately did not belong to the King himself, and was found in the late 18thC and donated to the Museum of Northern Antiquities in Denmark.

This piece is a zinc alloy with silver colour, unlike the original which was silver-gilt. It makes for an excellent 15thC belt buckle for your re-enactment or medieval costume.

Please note this is a buckle only, no belt is included.
