A basket-hilted broadsword in the Stirling school style, one of the two most celebrated centres of Scottish hilt-making, distinguished from the rival Glasgow school by its intricate openwork and inlaid brass decoration.

Scottish basket-hilt makers of the 17th and 18th centuries are generally grouped into two schools: Glasgow, known for a tighter, more closed-front basket construction, and Stirling, celebrated for its artistry of intricate openwork combined with inlaid brass circles, wavy lines, and fine hatching. Named Stirling hammermen including John Allan Sr, John Allan Jr, and Walter Allan produced hilts still regarded today as the pinnacle of the craft, with a level of individual detailing that marks Stirling work out from the more standardised regimental patterns that followed as basket-hilt production became more centralised through the 18th century.

A sword perfect for Scottish Highland living history and display, museum-style display on a wall mount or stand, Scottish and Highland-themed home decor and collections, historical events and Highland games, film and theatre productions set in 17th-18th century Scotland and collectors of named Scottish hilt-making traditions.
