Brass stopper pommel threaded with an M8 thread. This type of pommel is most common in 9thC and 10thC swords, but is also found in examples as late as the 16thC. This can probably be attributed to its simple but practical design, allowing it to carry on in use throughout the centuries. This particular example looks excellent with a sabre blade, but will suit straight blades well too.
