Shield bosses (also known as umbo) are central protrusions at the centre of round shields, used for deflecting blows against the shield and also providing a place to mount the shield's grip. Bosses were typically made of metal, be that bronze, iron, or steel. As round shields were generally replaced with heater shields and the enarmes grip became more popular, bosses transitioned away from a functional piece to a more decorative.
