If you wish to show your allegiance to the Knights Hospitaller, there's no simpler way than by wearing their iconic surcoat.
A surcoat is the final garment worn over a knight's armour. Derived from the French term "sur cote," meaning "over coat," it’s a sleeveless piece that fits over your main armour, such as chainmail or a gambeson. Traditionally, it was dyed in the colours of the wearer’s order, with their house or order's emblem displayed prominently. While primarily worn as part of a knight's armour, the surcoat also became a fashion statement for both men and women.
This particular surcoat represents the Knights Hospitaller. In striking black, with the bold white cross of the order emblazoned across the chest, there's no mistaking the wearer’s affiliation. Crafted from wool and lined with linen, this surcoat ensures warmth while avoiding the discomfort of wool directly on the skin. It follows the classic four-flap style, with slits around the thighs to allow for freedom of movement and ease of riding.
Pair it with chainmaille, add some spaulders, don a sugarloaf helm with a coif, and you’ll be fully equipped as a true Hospitaller knight!
Woollen cloak is available separately on this site.
