Chernigov type 2 wooden printing block (21cm diameter)
This wooden printing block print is based on a 10th -12th century textile fragment uncovered during excavations of Levenki Burial Mound #2, Chernigov, Ukraine. The second of three prints recovered from the same grave, the Chernigov prints would look great layered against each other in your next tunic, cloak or kaftan combination. This floral motif block is 21 cm and is ideal for printing over an entire garment. Mirroring the geometric roundel shapes of silk brocade popular during the middle ages, these prints were likely more common than rare textile finds suggest, potentially representing a local alternative to imported silks.
Block printing is a simple and effective way of decorating just about any fabric of your choice. Historic examples from Late Antiquity and Medieval contexts include Sassanian silk prints from Quedlinburg, Germany (6th-7th century CE), Moshchevaya Balka, North Western Caucasus (8th century CE) and Chernigov, Ukraine (10th-12th century CE).
