In the tenth century broad strap ends, of which this is an early example, came into style in Anglo Saxon England. This openwork bronze strap-end is shaped like a vine scroll, a type of plant ornament derived from Carolingian models. The tip of the belt was inserted into a split in the upper end of the strap-end, where it was fastened with two rivets (included). Works well with this buckle.
