Scent stopper pommels like this are so named after their resemblance to the ornate caps of glass perfume bottles, or so thought Oakeshott when he classified them. This particular scent stopper pommel is in the pear shaped variation, and they were common across Western Europe from the 14thC to 16thC, with particular usage on the ends of longswords and bastard swords.
