This is a bastard sword, also known as a hand-and-a-half sword, because it is neither a one handed nor a two handed sword. Typically used between the 13thC and 16thC, these swords were as ubiquitous as they were varied; in shape, style, crossguard and pommel type. The moniker 'bastard' may also refer to any sword whose origin or maker were not easily identified; that is, they had no family.
This particular bastard sword could be kindly called a 'long arming sword'. It has a handle that you would find on a single handed sword, but features a longer than usual blade and a wide crossguard like those on longswords. It truly sits in between the two classes. The pommel is a comfortable capped scent-stopper, meaning you can use your other hand on it to gain leverage and use the sword with two hands. The wide quillions will keep your hand protected throughout your battles. The point is also rounded off according to re-enactment standards allowing you to use this sword in combat without modification needed.
A unique sword for re-enactors, WMA practitioners and collectors looking to gain an edge on the battlefield.
