Quills were the primary writing instrument in the Western World from the 6th to the 19th century. Quills went into decline after the invention of the metal pen.

Quill pens were the instrument of choice during the medieval-era because they worked well on both parchment and vellum. Before this the reed pen had been used, but a finer letter was achieved on animal skin using a cured quill. Other than written text, they were often used to create figures, decorations, and images on manuscripts.

This quill is made from a purple feather, silver coloured metal cylinder and comes with an array of 6 steel nibs. It measures approx. 25cm overall with the steel cylinder & nib measuring 8.5cm in length.

An ink bottle is also included with this quill although it is empty to ensure spillage does not occur.

There is also a handy metal quill holder  to rest the pen while working.
