The pilum was a javelin commonly used by the Roman army in ancient times.
It was generally about 2 metres long overall, consisting of an iron shank about 7 millimetres in diameter and 60 centimetres long with pyramidal head. The shank was joined to the wooded shaft by either a socket or a flat tang and was usually made with softer iron.
This softness would cause the shank to bend after impact, rendering the weapon useless to the enemy or, if the pilum struck a shield it had the potential to embed itself, bending the shank on impact and forcing the enemy to discard their shield as it would become unusable without removing the pilum, a difficult and time consuming process.

Please note: This pilum is shipped in two pieces and will require some simple assembly once received.
