Gorgons were a popular image in Greek mythology. Their legendary gaze could turn humans to stone and therefore images of gorgons were often put upon objects for protection.
This metal helmet features an imposing cream coloured horse hair plume, a gorgon positioned right in the very centre of the helms brow and two hippocampus, hippocamps or hippokampoi; a composite creature with the head and fore-parts of a horse and the serpentine-tail of a fish; are positioned either side of the dome.
