Description
Large bronze buckle, crude Ringerike style ornament dated to early eleventh century. The original was probably found in the Thames, it is currently in British Museum. The finest of a series of triangular Ringerike buckles, which might reflect renewed Viking prestige in southern England at this time. Because of its large size (71 mm), to my mind it was probably from riding harness rather than dress, so I have made a scaled down version to match the strapends of the period, such as this strapend. The tongue is lost to corrosion, so presumably it was of iron like many others are known to be.
