Called by many names, "chapel de fer", "war hat" or "kettle hat"; the broad brimmed, open face helmet was the most popular of all helmets for fighting on foot. The broad brim shields strikes and blows from hand weapons, and offers protection from missiles hailing from above.

They were first produced ( as reported in Documentaria Anglo, 1478) in England around 1011, 55 years before the famous battle of Hastings. These hats, although cheap, were not admired at first because they were considered cowardly. However, those who did use them, proved that it was something worthwhile.

Although it did leave the face vulnerable, many preferred the vision and access to air over the protection offered by covered helmets. This style of helmet is not limited to the middle ages as it continued being used in some form or another.

This helmet has a polished finish and comes lightly padded with chin strap.

Maciejowski Bible Chapel de Fleur This is a well constructed helm suitable for reenactment use - both display and combat. I have used this now for two fighting seasons and it is going strong. I like the fact that it is a very close resemblance to the helm worn by Goliath in the Maciejowski Bible, c1250.

I removed the padding to fit over my arming cap and coif, however would be sufficient for combat with just an arming cap underneath - depending on your group's arming standards.

A little maintenance is required on the brim as it is only 1.6mm but the dome is strong and ridge piece has taken some very significant hits from two-handed weapons with very little visible damage.
